- Every religion contains a manifest truth and a hidden misconception. These misconceptions are not from God nor His Messengers. They are from human interpreters down the line.
- In Judaism, for example, the manifest Truth is the One God and His Chosen people. The hidden misconception is in the meaning of Chosen people. It certainly doesn’t mean that they are the only people that matter and it doesn’t mean either that they have been chosen forever. In fact ,I believe they lost that position a long time ago, despite the numerous favours that God bestowed on them.
In Christianity, the manifest Truth again is the One God and Jesus as his Messenger and Messiah. The misconception is in the Trinity and the idea of Jesus as son of God.These are man-made constructs(mind productions) and do not represent ultimate Reality as well as contributing to a lot of theological confusion.
In Buddhism the manifest truth is a pathway to arrive to Oneness with the Absolute(Nibbana for Buddhists). The hidden misconception is that this represents a complete teaching about how to live on the Earth and how to relate to this Absolute once realized.Remember that Buddha left his family and chose the way of monasticism.Just as many Christian priests have gone wrong in this way,Buddhists are subject to similar imbalances by not allowing for normal human needs as both Islam and Judaism do.
In Hinduism, the manifest truth is that one can arrive at many altered states of consciousness including Nirvana through meditation and yoga and following gurus. The hidden error is that idol-worship is fine(directly prohibited in the Ten Commandments) and that the guru is to be worshiped as God(another form of idolatry).
In Islam, the religion that I have been guided to,the manifest truth is that God is One and that the Prophet Mohammed pbuh is the last in a long line of Messengers and that he is carrying the message in an untarnished way confirmed by the most authentic scripture we have-the Quran. The misconception is that this is the only valid Way to enter into a relationship with God since the advent of this Prophet. This represents a misinterpretation of the scriptural sources.I have seen and heard of many Christians and Jews and even Buddhists and Hindus who have attained high levels of spiritual development. As I like to say”God is not an obsessive” and He doesn’t expect perfection from human beings-neither in their behaviour nor in their beliefs. We are called upon to strive for that perfection but ultimately it is the hearts that count.
It really is the foolishness and imperfection of peoples that have led to this obfuscation of reality. re The Quran (as always)
